Salary components explained

  • Basic + DA: the core of pay. PF, gratuity, bonus and leave encashment are calculated on it.
  • HRA: House Rent Allowance, partly tax-free in the old regime — check with the HRA calculator.
  • Special allowance: the balancing figure; fully taxable.
  • Employer PF: 12% of PF wages (up to the ₹25,000 ceiling unless paid on full basic). Part of CTC, goes to your PF/EPS account — see the EPF calculator.
  • ESI: applies when gross pay is ₹21,000/month or less — see the ESI calculator.
  • Professional tax: state-level tax up to ₹2,500 a year — see the PT calculator.
  • TDS: income tax deducted monthly by the employer — see the income tax calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate in-hand salary from CTC?

In-hand salary = CTC − employer PF − employer ESI − gratuity provision (if part of CTC) − employee PF − employee ESI − professional tax − income tax (TDS). The calculator does this automatically and shows the monthly and annual breakup.

Why is my in-hand salary much lower than CTC ÷ 12?

CTC includes amounts you never receive monthly: employer PF, gratuity, insurance and sometimes variable pay. Then your own PF (12% of basic), professional tax and TDS are deducted from gross salary.

Does the new EPF wage ceiling of ₹25,000 reduce take-home pay?

For employees whose PF is restricted to the statutory ceiling and whose basic is above ₹15,000, yes. From 17 September 2026 the ceiling rose to ₹25,000, so the employee PF can go up from ₹1,800 to as much as ₹3,000 a month. Retirement savings rise by the same amount.

Should basic salary be 50% of CTC under the new Labour Codes?

The Codes say allowances excluded from 'wages' cannot exceed 50% of total remuneration; any excess is treated as wages for PF, gratuity and other benefits. Many employers therefore set Basic + DA at about 50% of pay. That is why the calculator defaults to 50%.

Is salary up to ₹12.75 lakh tax-free?

Under the new regime for FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27, yes — the ₹75,000 standard deduction plus the 87A rebate on income up to ₹12 lakh makes tax nil. The in-hand amount is still reduced by PF and professional tax.

Is this an official salary calculator?

No. It is a free, unofficial estimate for HR and employees. Actual salary depends on your company's salary structure and policy, so check your offer letter or payslip.
